Default Create-A-Icon Challenge

This Idea was inspired by the Create-A-Skill thread on the Sardelac Sanitarium (my usual Haunt) Id like to get some creative juices flowing by inviting you arty types to create your very own skill icons - These can be just icons or icons with a basic skill idea, I'll Then ship them off to Sardelac to by polished by the Balancing Boffins over there.

I think Any ideas Skill ideas that come accompanied with icons and a good thought process stand a much higher chance of grabbing the attention of any Anet employee (though I wouldnt get my hopes up ^ ^)

Some basic Points about the Create a Skill Challenge (Id be happy if a mod could change the title please)

What is the Create-a-skill challenge
The create-a-skill Challenge is a project to present Anet with a vivid and planned idea. At end we hope to have a good selection of skills (with icons) that have been balanced and aproved by the community. This will involve 5 steps:

Step 1 - Designers at the Nolani Academy of Arts will design icons for the skills, and provide rough ideas if they see fit.
[You are here]

Step 2 - These Skill icons will be taken to the Sardelac Sanitarium for ideas of skills that compliment them, the 5 most orginal ideas (and useful) for each skill will be taken onto step 3 [We are currently here]

Link to that post
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...84#post1925584

Step 3 - Each icon with the 5 ideas will be taken to the riverside tavern were the avarage guild wars player will vote on what Idea this like most. After the skills have been voted for the'll be taken to the final step.

Step 4 - The Icons with there favoured Idea will be taken to the Arcane Repository where the skill loving members will help to balance them and make them fit more fluidly into the current game

Step 5 - Presenting the ideas to Anet, this will eb done when we have a large amount of ideas

What can I do?
This is currently step 1, Where you arty types are given the chance to create some fancy new skill icons to be molded into new skills

I have an idea for a Icon, but no Skill can i still post it?
Skill ideas are not required from the artists making the icons, feel free to post whatever icons you think could work within the game - Even if you dont know how

Are there any Rules?
There are no rules but 3 points to bear in mind while creating skills
1. Try to keep it serious, Joke skills are often funny but can be kept to other threads
2. Does this Icon already exist? If the skill you are thinking of is the same or similar to an existing Icon then rethink it, or find a way to add a new spin onto it
3. Remember the ultimate goal here is to create a well thought out set of skills for Anet. Anything you post here is subject to Editing, Balancing and any number of changes and by submitting ideas on any of the 5 steps you granting permission for Anet or anyone they deem worthy to use your work freely.

Will this work
Who knows? The most honest anwser i can give is most likely no, Anet rarly use ideas created by the community and a sceptical of using artwork from them. But hopefully this idea will stand out enough to make them reconsider this.

Here are some basic aids if you need them (organized by Class):
General Aid
Here is a rough Elite outline taken from Signet of Judgement, Beacuse of the slight transparency it favours grey shades. A better Elite border would be apreciated.

Elite:

Warrior
Warrior Skills offten favour people and weaponry in there skills, The 2 main colours of these skills are Orange and Black. Most images in the skills are of dark shades with orange Backgrounds, Almost all warrior skills use a light orange Aura or Burst to hilight something in the skill image

Warrior Examples:

Monk
Monk skills Favor Light Blues and yellows and any mixture of these, with the occasional Light green. A popular theme in monk skills is the Release of Spirits or energy or some other form of power, normally shown in a lighter glow. Monk skills rarly feature any violent scenes.

Monk Examples:

Elementalist
Elementalist skills have some of the wides ranges of colours from all the skills, But the main focus of an Elementalist skill is the colour Red. Water magic favours Light and icy blues, Earth redish Browns, Air Whites, Fire light reds and energy managment sometimes feature golds. Unlike the above examples the Aura of burst on a elementalist skill has a darker colour opposed to a lighter one

Elementalist Examples:

Another skill of the Elementalist is the Glyph, These feature a golden rune carved into a Spiked cricle. Examples of these can be found below witha rough template

Glyph Example:

Blank Glyph:

Ranger
The main focus of ranger skills is Green. Many other colours are used in them but they can all be considered "natural" colours such as brown or faded blue. Some ranger skills follow a set pattern. Marksmanship shows an arrow, Beast mastery a animal or animal part. Nature rituals often show the effect of that ritual. Any aura ina ranger skill is light green.

Ranger Examples:

Necromancer
Necromancer skills use lighter more sickly greens than the ranger. Sometimes mixed in with a light blue aura supprising similar to the monk skills. These skills feature images of pain and suffering. This is an excelent chance to create a new minion people have been asking for

Necromancer Examples:

Mesmer
The mesmer uses Pinky/Purple as its main colour, also using Blue from time to time. These images are focused on Illusion and trickery and therefore feature alot of blurred unclear images. Mesmer skills are alos known to be quite Flashy and Ego indulgent.

Mesmer Examples:

Another skill of mesmers is Mantras Much like Glypths these have a set image which the centre is altered for the skill.

Mantra Examples:

Signets
Signets are one of the more versitile skills in any bar, they ranger greatly in colour and the only thing they have in common is a sort of embossed or carved effect, some do not even have this. Signets can be some of the most fun icons to create due to this flexablity. Also Signets are feature the only two skills not to belong to a class.

Signet Examples:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

That concludes the Icons I hope to see some great work from some of guild wars finest fan artists, who knows your work could form the basis of the next Ultimate Build, or be the next res sig and apear in every skillbar (or should ^ ^)

Notes:
1. Assasin, Ritulist,Paragon and Dervish do not apear above beacuse Anet have often suggested there will be no new skill for the prestege classes
2.By submitting work to this tread you give full permission for it to be used by Anet, and asociated companies or any they deem worthy.
3. You do not need to use the above as a ridgid guide, Let your imagination run wild!

Good luck all and hope to see some good work from you

Edit:
-Fixed some minor spelling mistakes, most likely many left
-Added a basic point section and a link to the sadelac thread
- Added skill to Sardelac

If rangers can plant traps that stab you and set you on fire, surely they can handle some firecrackers.

I'm a huge hydromancer fan, and would love to see more water spells...so here are some of my creations...since there was no limit that i saw...

Bubble Blast
5 Energy / 1 Second Casting Time / 10 Recharge
Target Foe takes 40 damage and is hexed with Bubble Blast, for the next 10 seconds, next time that foe attacks, Bubble Blast deals an additional 40 damage and Bubble Blast ends.

Liquid Distorion
15 Energy / 1/4 Second Cast Time / 45 Recast
Enchantment Spell. Whenever you are the target of an enemy attack or spell, it is missed/failed and foe becomes blinded for 3...6 seconds.

Snow Storm
25 Energy / 3 Second Casting Time / 60 Second Recharge
Target Foe and All nearby foes take 65...85 damage and is slowed for 5...10 seconds. Attacking foes are knocked down and blinded for 3...5 seconds.

I dont know if my spells are way too out there, but i thought the designs were fun...bleh...

Soothing Flame:

This was originally a Rit Icon, modified into a necro icon, and then finally wound up as a monk icon in the end

Soothing Flame: 5e 1/2c 6r
Heal Ally for 30...54. If target ally was on fire, heal for and extra 30...54.

Progression 30+2X.

This is for all the burning that's going to be going on with paragons an all. It may need to be nerfed a little, but I'd like it to be as strong as heal other when used on a burning foe. And since burning only last for a few seconds...you get the drift

Here's two warrior skills I did. Both probably need a lot of rebalancing, though.

Iron Blood
Adrenaline Cost: 8 |Cast Time: 1 Second|Recharge Time: 60s

Stance. For 30 seconds, your armor level is increased by 10...25%, but you take 50% more lightning damage, and your movement speed is reduced by 25%.

Wreckless Swing
Adrenaline Cost: 8 |Cast Time: 1/2 Second|Recharge Time: 30s

Axe attack. You swing wrecklessly at the target, sending him and adjacent targets into shock, disabling their attack for 3...10 seconds. You also have a 50% chance to hit the shocked targets, dealing 20...40 damage.

Here's my latest one. I feel it OWNS my earlier two, and seems to have a similar art style to that of ArenaNet's icons.

Ring of Fire
Energy Cost: 10 | Cast Time: 3s | Recharge Time: 10s
Flames begin to encircle your character, and then ripple outward, setting foes that they come in contact with on fire for 5...20 seconds. After travelling a certain distance, the flames detonate, dealing 30...80 damage to foes adjacent to the explosions. This spell causes exhaustion.
